Sunshine Math is an enrichment program created to help children become successful students of mathematics. It is not intended to replace any aspect of the classroom curriculum. It is designed to teach responsibility and to help students develop problem-solving skills, and critical and creative thinking.
Your role in Sunshine Math is to encourage, and facilitate problem solving. Feel free to offer guidance toward certain strategies, read the problems to your child, but please, do not give the answers. In order for this program to be effective, the students must work independently. The thinking must be their own.
The first session of Sunshine Math for 1st thru 3rd graders begins September 17. Sunshine Math worksheets will be sent home each week in the VIP packets. Students should return the completed worksheets to their homeroom teacher by the following Tuesday. Worksheets can also be found under Parent Resources. Students will be rewarded with Scholastic Book Reward coupons that can be used towards purchases at the Vanderlyn Book fairs.
The Literacy Committee hosts two special reading events called "Reading Under The Stars" during the school year. These social events are a great way to introduce students who may be new to the program or who want to get started with AR.
Each event will have Mr. Maloof and other special guests who will read AR books to the students. At the event, each student is provided with a Passport to Learning. This passport can be their record of what books they have read and tested on.
In addition, students can register for a chance to win fun door prizes given away every hour throughout the event. Your students will have fun reading and discussing books with friends while giving themselves a great jumpstart to earning points towards becoming Rockstar Readers on the Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame!
